6. Why is supporting Fairtrade important to you and your business?
As a family-owned and run business, Red Carnation Hotels genuinely cares about its people and local communities. We work hard to protect the wildlife and environments within which we operate and are passionate about sustainability.
7. Do you support any other environmental or community initiatives, either locally or worldwide?
In 2021 we installed AI technology in our kitchens, photographing and weighing our food waste to help reduce plate waste and over ordering. In the last 12 months our vigilance in reducing food waste has resulted in a total decrease in food waste by 39% across our 18 hotels, placing us on target to hit 50% by 2025.
In Guernsey during April, we threw away 147.19kg of orange skins at OGH. Our chefs are now competing to produce the best marmalade.
We have our first bee hive in the OGH garden, hoping that we can incorporate our own honey in our menus – A number of our hotels produce their own honey resulting in 660 lbs per year.
We use vegware boxes as an alternative to our previous takeaway boxes and we have those available at events.
Our ambition is to remove all unnecessary single-use plastics by the end of 2022. We’ve removed 51 items, just a few to go.
We are proud to work alongside The Treadright Foundation and the TTC family of brands to MAKE TRAVEL MATTER through conservation, leadership and support for communities.
We have six Make Travel Matter experiences that we offer our guests. They are currently experiences with Dave Bartram – Cattle and Coastline educating guests in our biodiversity and the important role the steers on Bunker Hill play, a bee experience and petanque and gache. We also have experiences with Gill Girard – all of which end up at their family farmhouse where guests sample our local produce including cheese, cider, apple juice, chocolate, fudge, and sloe gin.
Team members regularly volunteer and take part in local events – The Swimarathon, The Runway Run, Everest Challenge and regular beach cleans.
